Shelter-in-Place

What is Shelter-in-Place?
Shelter-in-place is a safety procedure where individuals take immediate refuge indoors during an emergency, such as a hazardous materials incident, severe weather event, or other situations where the outside environment poses a threat.

When to Shelter-in-Place

You may be instructed to shelter-in-place by emergency officials during:
Chemical spills or hazardous materials incidents
Severe weather events (tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.)
Terrorist attacks or other acts of violence
Airborne biological or chemical threats

Follow these steps to ensure your safety during a shelter-in-place situation:

  1. Go Inside Immediately
    • Quickly bring all family members and pets indoors.
    • If you are in a vehicle, find the nearest safe building to take shelter.
  2. Secure Your Location
    • Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.
    • Turn off ventilation systems, including fans, air conditioning, and heating units.
    • Close fireplace dampers and any other openings to the outside.
  3. Create a Safe Room
    • Choose an interior room with few or no windows.
    • Seal gaps under doors and windows with wet towels, duct tape, or plastic sheeting.
    • Use materials to block air from entering through vents and outlets.
  4. Stay Informed
    • Tune in to local news stations on a battery-powered radio.
    • Follow instructions from emergency officials via TV, radio, or official social media accounts.
    • Avoid using the phone unless it is an emergency to keep lines open for emergency communication.
  5. Prepare an Emergency Kit
    • Keep a kit with essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, medications, and any necessary personal items.
  • Wait for official notification that it is safe to leave your shelter.
  • Open windows and doors to ventilate your home once the threat has passed.
  • Check in with family, friends, and neighbors to ensure everyone is safe.
